Get Golf-Ready: The Role of Pulling Exercises in Your Fitness Plan

Want to add more power and precision to your golf swing? The secret might lie in your fitness routine. Incorporating pulling exercises into your golf fitness regimen can significantly improve your posture and enhance your performance on the course.

Why Pulling Exercises Are Essential for Golfers

I love pulling exercises because they specifically target the muscles of the back, shoulders, and arms, which are great for posture and crucial for just about everyone these days as we all spend so much time in front of screens.

Enhancing muscle balance and posture can also aid in preventing common injuries caused by muscle imbalances and repetitive strain.

Additionally, pulling exercises contribute to better overall body stability, which is essential for maintaining consistency and precision in every swing.

Understanding Pulling Exercises

So what is a pulling exercise? Basically movements that bring a weight or resistance towards your body whilst engaging multiple muscle groups.

Effective Pulling Exercises for Golfers

The two main pulling exercises that all my clients do are:

  • Rows: Target the upper back and improve posture. There are countless ways to row, but I much prefer free weight rows to machine rows because of the additional core engagement needed to maintain good form.

  • Deadlifts: Are a key exercise as they engage the entire posterior chain, (back of your body) working your back, shoulders, glutes and hamstrings, all essential for enhancing overall strength and stability.

Of course there are also varieties of pull ups and pull downs that depending on your shoulder health and range of motion may also be appropriate depending on the results of a movement screen, but to keep it simple you can’t go wrong with suitable variations of rows and deadlifts.

I recommend doing at least a 2:1 ratio of pulling to pushing exercises in your golf fitness programming to help rectify postural imbalances. If you’re ready for a completely personalised golf fitness programme don't wait, take the first step towards a more powerful swing today and book a free discovery call.
