Years ago when I studied Tai Chi and Kung Fu I learned that power comes from the ground. Great golfers understand not only where power comes from but also the correct kinematic sequence to maximise that power throughout their swing and increase their club head speed.
The Importance Of Ground Force In Golf
Ground force is a critical element in golf, as it serves as the foundation for generating power during a swing. By effectively utilising the ground, you can transfer energy through your legs, hips and up into your swing, enhancing both distance and accuracy.
Once you get the hang of this dynamic interaction with the ground you should feel much greater stability and control, allowing for a more free and powerful and efficient swing.
From a fitness perspective being able to access that power provides potential to improve your overall performance on the course. This is why we incorporate exercises to help golfers learn how to create ground force as well as functional movement and strength training to allow your pelvis to rotate to facilitate using that power effectively.
Understanding the Kinematic Sequence
The kinematic sequence in golf refers to the precise order and timing of body movements during a swing, crucial for generating maximum power and efficiency. It begins with ground force through the lower body, followed by the torso, arms, and finally, the club. This coordinated movement allows for optimal energy transfer, leading to increased swing speed and improved shot accuracy.
As a fitness professional it’s not my job to help you sequence your swing, but more to help you move well, get stronger and more powerful so you can work with your swing coach to understand and master the kinematic sequence.
Remember your swing doesn’t have to look like someone else’s as our bodies all move around our unique limitations. Our personalised golf fitness training programmes are designed individually to help you move better so you can master ground force and the kinematic sequence to ultimately increase your club head speed.
