I’m beginning to discover that golf isn’t just a sport, it can quickly become an obsession. One good swing keeps you coming back for more, even when that slice just won’t go away.
The Thrill of the Perfect Swing
It’s pretty damn satisfying when you hit that awesome shot that makes all the practice worthwhile. Being fairly new to golf it’s taken me a while to get the hang of my driver and now for the most part it’s not too bad, and I love the thrill of a powerful drive up the fairway.
Now of course I just want to hit it further and further so admittedly I have a strength and power focus in my training right now, though the only person I’m competing against is myself.
That One Shot That Keeps You Coming Back
I never thought I’d enjoy golf as much as I do. I mean half the time I feel like it’s the dumbest game ever and I couldn’t sink a putt if the cup was the width of a football. Then by some miracle I manage the perfect read on a long putt and it’s drawn to the cup like a magnet.
I can flip from, I’m over this game to this game is awesome from one hole to the next but I guess that’s the magic of having that one good shot that keeps you coming back.
Golf Is More Than a Game—It’s a Challenge
Another reason golf is addictive is the never-ending challenge, both physical and mental, I can see why my clients love to obsess over it.
Always Room for Improvement
I love a challenge but I must admit it’s satisfying to see that even the pros can have off days and need to focus on some part of their game, and that’s what makes golf so addictive.
Mastering the Mental Game
Surprising to me was just how much of a mental game golf is, given that my job is a golf fitness trainer it makes sense that I’d notice the mental more than the physical. Honestly I don’t think I’d have had the patience for the mental side if I’d taken up golf earlier, but having done some training on mindset and mental conditioning I’m much more able to shake off those frustrations now than when I was younger.
Camaraderie on the Course
Golf isn’t just about the game—it’s about the people you play with and the laughs you share, because let’s be honest you need a sense of humour to play golf.
I took up golf in the first place to play with my son as I thought it would be a good way to spend time with him when he inevitably leaves home soon, and it’s been a good way to network and to make new friends. Plus there’s the added bonus of spending time in nature which is so good for overall well-being.
Golf and Life Lessons
The biggest lessons I’ve learned so far are…
The fitter you are the better you move and the better you play.
Patience is paramount, some days you play great and some days you just suck. And finally if you want to be good at anything in life you need a great coach, and golf is no exception.
